Portfolio Reflection - please reflect on one piece of work from your Nature of Science Unit.
Choose one of the assignments
Choose the competency (Communication, Problem Solving, Teamwork, Use of Numbers and Data) which it demonstrates.
On a separate piece of paper do the reflection. Remember you are trying to connect this assignment with the competency. Focus on that first. How does it show it?
Then you can focus on:
What you did well? (Strengths)
What you have improved on from previous assignments and work? I'm doing this much better .... (Areas of Improvement)
What are some areas of concern? Things to work on next time to make it better? (Concerns)
How can you be more successful? How are you going to improve next time? (Actions Needed)

LAB: White Before Your Eyes Write Up First: Look over the lab report format in your science notebook or online below [[file/view/lab_report_format.doc|lab_report_format.doc]]
I. Purpose: from the handout and in your own words
II. Background Knowledge: list any information your know about working with the four white powders. Do you know if any of them react? Example: I know that baking powder is used in cooking, I know that baking soda and vinegar make bubbles because I've made a volcano before.
III. Hypothesis: Not needed
IV. Materials: list of the materials used (on the sheet)
V. Procedures: Write the procedures in a numbered sequence. Write them in your own words and use the worksheet for a reference. It IS written in numbered steps.
VI. Data and Analysis: Complete the two tables. The one we did in class labeled "observations" is the DATA section and the reverse side labeled "Changes and Properties" is the ANALYSIS sections. Just write "see tables" for this section.
Help in filling out the "Changes and Properties" side: In each "change" box write down one change that occurred and in the "property" box write the chemical or physical property that it indicates or shows. They are listed at the bottom of the sheet.
EXAMPLE: baking soda and vinegar: Change box: Bubbles formed. Property Box: reactivity with vinegar
Cornstrach and Iodine: Change box: Color changed black Property Box: reactivity with iodine solution
VII: Conclusion: (this is a narrative of what you did, found out and discovered ... this lab did not have a hypothesis so those parts have been left out)
Include why you did this experiment (restate the purpose/problem).
Explain in your own words what you did and what found out or discovered. This section is a narrative about the procedures, data, and results. (restate the procedures and analysis)
Discuss any errors or problems that occurred during the experiment that might have affected the data in ANY way. Spilling, extra drops ... really think about things that might have affected the observations or accuracy.
Discuss what you might do to improve the experiment and make it more accurate. You might talk about fixing the problems.
Discuss the significance of the experiment. How does this experiment relate to the real world? Why did you do it? What’s the purpose? Review and think about what is important about being able to distinguish or decide whether chemical or physical changes are taking place.
NOTES: Mixtures and Solutions/Physical and Chemical Changes
QUIZ ALERT!!
Study the first two sets of notes. Know these things: what are atoms, elements, compounds, what causes matter to have it's properties, characteristics of the three states of matter, draw the three states of matter, definitions and examples on the 18 physical properties of matter.
